Should my engagment and wedding ring be the same white gold carat??

December 29th, 2009 by admin Leave a reply »

My engagment ring is 14ct and while wedding ring shopping i’ve fallen in love with an 18ct white gold band, but some jewellers have told me to match the carat so one ring does not ‘wear’ the other while other jewellers say that it does not matter… i’d love to know what you think about this — does your wedding and engagement rings match in quality??? thankyou

The higher the carat the softer the ring. Get what you like, and worry about wear later.

No it does not have to match in carat. It is actually wise to make the wedding band 18carat because you will be wearing that more than your engagement ring.

Those jewelers who want you to match just want a sale. Go for what you picked. Nobody stares at ring carats anyway. If they do–How rude!

The carats don’t have to match.

However, the higher the carat, the softer the gold….so if you will be wearing your wedding band more often, I suggest you get the 14kt instead of the 18…you don’t want the daily wear to misshape your ring.

    they are right about wear!!!

Not only is the 18 kt gold softer but it is also 75% gold (which is yellow) vs. the 14kt being only approx. 58% gold. So the 18kt will appear to have more of a yellow tinge than the 14kt after ther Rhodium ( a very high quality/expensive white plating used as a standard plating over white gold to make it brighter, whiter, and have more shine) plate wears off. If that doesn’t bother you go for the ring you love or ask if it is available in 14kt.

Mine are the same, but I would say they do not have to match. They can always re-dip one if it is wearing out faster. Buy what you love.

in my limited knowledge of rings.. i think white gold is white gold regardless of the karat.

    Good luck.

I makes no difference unless you choose platinum and gold and they rub together, then you’d want them to be soldered…but then again Platinum wears a lot faster and can not be shined like gold can.

You’re fine if you have a 14 and 18ct gold together :) no worries.

You will eventually be able to see the difference. Rhodium plating can be re-applied after the “wear” occurs, and is relatively inexpensive. However, you might want to look online to see if you can find a similar band in 14k gold, just so you don’t have to think about it as much.

No they don’t have to be, but the higher carat is softer, and thus is more prone to getting out of shape. Also, white has to be redipped, so take that cost into consideration.
My rings are both 14k yellow gold.

Well, 18k gold is softer than 14k and scratches up so much easier. My wedding band does match match my engagement ring in 14K white gold and I find the both very sturdy, especially because I’m slack and don’t take them off when doing house cleaning etc.

If it is any help, I got it from an online store, here is the link to the ring I purchased:
