I’m a pretty frugal person. My boyfriend and I have been talking about marriage and I’m pretty sure he’ll be proposing in the next few months. I have a few questions. First, I want a white sapphire ring instead of a diamond ring, at least for my engagement ring. I hate people spending a lot of money on me. Is that a good idea for an engagement ring? I would probably want a diamond ring for my wedding band, but at least then I’d definitely pitch in for it.
I also would like to go ring shopping with him. He doesn’t have bad taste in jewelry, but I’m kind of particular. I know he’d be fine with it because he would rather get something that he knows I like than have to choose himself, but how do I bring this up? I feel awkward telling him what I want when he’s the one proposing. What’s the easiest way to do that?

How often should white gold be replated?
June 16th, 2011My bridal set is 18k white gold & starting to go yellow.
At first I freaked out & went to the jeweller where we got it & she told me it needed it to be rhodium plated again (I know why it goes yellow, so no need to explain) Since getting engaged it’d lost a lot of weight & had the engagement ring resized twice before & the wedding back resized once. The jeweller told me they always give them a deep clean as well as plate it again whenever they get resized so thats why I never noticed the yellowing before & that I should have it redone every 4-6 months (which I think is a bit excessive, or they’re selling poorer quality gold)
My engagement ring is less than 3 years old & my wedding band is only 8 months old (the wedding band being the MOST yellow too), I really don’t think white gold should be going THIS yellow that quick.
My mum has been married for 29 years this year, she still wears her 18k white gold set & it’s not yellow at all & she said she had hers redone on their first wedding anniversary & hasn’t done it once since. You can see that it needs a good clean & a polish, but definitely not yellow.
How often do you believe it should be replated, how often do you have yours done, etc?
a couple of things to clear up…
solid white gold? If it was solid gold I wouldn’t be wearing out, I think you mean PURE gold, which is 24k, no it’s 18k, I mentioned that above.
white gold goes yellow because there is no such thing as real white gold. platinum & rhodium are mixed in with yellow gold to make it white, same as how copper is added to gold to make rose gold or silver is added to it to make green gold.
white gold needs to be replated so that the yellow stays away, kind of like how a bottle blonde needs to use toner occasionally so that her hair doesn’t go yellow or orange.
I have been assured my ring was made with platinum & rhodium mixed into the gold. it is still under it’s warranty so I’m not freaking about that.
also, it has come from a reputable jeweller. we got it from Michael Hill. when he’s been in business for over 30 years & has over 250 stores, so I’m sure their not selling silver disguised as gold.
I’m just saying I really don’t think it SHOULD be yellow b
