Why do wedding and engagement rings have to be “traditional”?

October 21st, 2010

I’ve never understood why wedding and engagement have to be “traditional”. One of my dearest friends in the world has a black titanium ring, with a black diamond in the center (in a tension setting), and has two, bezel set, white diamonds (one on each side fo the black diamond). I think the ring is GORGEOUS!

But people have told her that her ring is “ugly, trashy, useless, not feminine enough, to manly.” I can’t fathom a prettier non-traditional ring myself.

I really enjoy finding really interesting rings. I’ve found sites that cater to my love of ‘non-traditional’ rings. As a matter of fact I am having a new wedding/engagement ring made for me when my husband deploys next year to Bahrain. Mine will be made out of platinum and diamonds. But I don’t want a “traditional” ring. To me that is BORING!

So my question to you folks out there reading this question. What is wrong with not having a “traditional” wedding/engagement ring? Let me hear your opinions. Please be tactful. Thanks.

For wedding rings I am considering a gem w/diamonds instead of traditional diamonds. What do you think?

August 18th, 2010

This will be my second marriage. My first marriage the ring was traditional 1 carat princess cut with 8 princess cuts on the side. Want something different for second time around. Everything I look at now is all the same, every store has the same thing just different prices, so I want to go with something unique, but still elegant for a ring. I am thinking of a light blue or sapphire with diamonds. My wedding are those colors. Let me know what you think.

If look down the lanes of history we will find that gold is always preferred by persons of different civilizations. Gold is good because it can afford the price and as well as it can bring the satisfaction of both the bride and groom. Being pure and perfect, the gold wedding rings are easily malleable and of course they are soft. It is exactly advisable to purchase gold wedding rings that are made with several other combinative metals like silver, in order to get the best strength and durability.

In France and mostly in French speaking countries three interwoven rings are considered as a wedding ring. These three interwoven rings stand for Christian virtues of ‘faith’, ‘hope’ and ‘love’. Here the word ‘love’ indicates a particular type of perfect disinterested love synonymous to the Greek word ‘agape’. This pattern slides off quickly because the rings flow over each other. Women in Greek and Anatolian which consist of most of modern turkey wear and receive puzzle wedding ring. This is nothing but sets of interlocking metal bands and the bride must arrange it in order to form a single ring out of it. Traditionally men wryly give this type of ring as a test of their women’s monogamy. With the time passing this ritual has been obsolete any intellectual women can solve the ring puzzle with little bit of practice and little effort. In North America we got to see a different picture. In North America and in European countries it is seen that women wear two different rings on the same finger. Those are a plain wedding band and an engagement ring. They buy such rings as a pair of bands designed to fit together. And moreover it is also seen that women who are married for a long time wears three rings on their finger, from hand to tip of finger. They are serially a wedding band, an engagement ring, and an eternity ring. In UK this pattern of wearing rings is very common. Engraving wedding rings are also hot favorite among couples of United States.

Celtic designs are engraved or embossed with a Celtic knot design which symbolizes oneness and continuity. Claddagh wedding rings symbolize fidelity and Russian three interlocking rings are bands of rose, made up of yellow and white gold and worn on the right hand. Celtic wedding bands originate from Ireland. The Celts were people who lived in the country and other parts of Central and Western Europe during the first millennium BC. Most of the Celtic wedding bands get their designs from manuscripts belonging to the Irish, and the Book of Kells is a great example of these. The influences that can be seen in the designs of Celtic wedding rings come from the Irish church and partly from the Christian missionaries. This is because these were the main religious influences that dominated the Celtic religion.

Celtic wedding bands are known to be among the most traditional wedding rings and are quite popular up to this day. In the early days though, these bands represented status and wealth as well as fidelity. They have become family heirlooms because of their symbolism, grandeur and exquisite craftsmanship.

A beautiful wedding ring can make your wedding ceremony extra special to you and your partner. Nowadays couples are more conscious about their wedding rings as every wedding couple wants their wedding ring so beautifully made that it reflects their love and respect for each other. You can not deny the fact that a wedding ring can change the ambience of the wedding ceremony and make your partner so much impressed that she can not stop loving you from the very beginning. It is an opportunity for you to choose the right option and make the relation that you are having ahead of your life.

There are several styles of wedding ring collection such as art deco style, medieval style, Celtic style, modern style, antique style, classic styles and so on. Every style is perfect for some one. You have to choose one that goes with your personality and liking. You can mix up two different styles in order to create a new style. Modern couples are inclined to simple but gorgeous looking wedding ring set. They sometimes prefer matching wedding ring sets or they may prefer matching wedding bands.

Art deco period’s style is gaining its momentum among the young pairs. The specialty of this historical period’s style is bold colorful shapes and striking colors. Bold colorful stones and diamonds are used in this type of ring. As it has an antique influence therefore it also has a classic look and its simplicity looks still modern. So, it is simultaneously modern and classic looking. Art deco style is inspired from Victorian era with its decorative style that it enjoys. For this reason art deco period style is becoming demanding and popular.

On the other hand medieval or Celtic stylistic period is important to say about its historical influences on the designs of a wedding ring. So route your design in either the medieval period or the Celtic period. Both the styles are ancient in looking historical in appearance. Medieval style mainly focuses on shape such as quatrefoils and on other hand Celtic design style is all about interweaving lines. Both depend on the ability of the artist. So, before buying a wedding ring it is important to go to a good jewelry fashion house where you can consult your quarries and order your desired one.

There is always an option for you to choose a design or style which does not belong to a specific historical era or period. You just have to consider whether your ring would be more ‘traditional’ or more’ modern’ looking. Traditional can be perhaps summed up best by a claw set diamond solitaire and a modern designed ring would be generally asymmetrical with clean and crisp lines. Now in this modern age everyone prefers to have his or her wedding ring something between classic and modern looking. The majority tells this. These types of ring can be called ‘traditional rings’ with a ‘contemporary twist’. In other words it can be said a classical idea reworked into a modern design.

All of the Celtic wedding rings follow the ancient traditional look that you will see in the original wedding ring styles. The main difference with the Celtic wedding rings is that they are no longer confined to being made with just gold or silver bands.

Today you can find Celtic wedding rings being made from other metals, like that of Titanium. There are also Celtic wedding rings that have been fashioned out of a metal that is blue gray in color. This ring is called a Meteorite ring. While this ring bears this name you will find that it has a shiny appearance that is somewhat rough in texture. Celtic wedding rings like this have been fashioned entirely by hand. This makes each one subtly different.

For the person who is determined that their wedding should have an entirely Celtic flavor to it, buying Claddagh Celtic wedding rings will spell out the theme of the wedding and it will show where your personal tastes lie. These Claddagh wedding rings are identified as being completely Celtic in origin and that if you are wearing one of these rings you are symbolizing your feelings for the entire world to see.

Behind the Claddagh Celtic wedding rings there is a very interesting story. The story has to do with faith, trust and love. In the Claddagh wedding ring the design is two hands that are clasping a heart. On the top of the heart there is a crown. According to the legend if this Claddagh ring is worn on the left hand and the crown is turned outwards it proclaims to the whole world that your heart is taken by a true and faithful love.

These are just a few of the many different Celtic wedding rings that you can find. You will see that all of these Celtic wedding rings are very beautiful and they give an air of ancient traditions to modern weddings. Therefore you should wear your Celtic wedding ring with pride and joy.
