What are some things to look in a plain wedding band? Pros and cons of white gold vs platinum?

December 4th, 2010

My boyfriend and I are going to look for engagement rings soon. I’m a very practical person and for various reasons I’ve decided that I just want a plain band, no diamonds, no frills for my engagement ring (with a nicer ring for my wedding band)

Anyways, I’m not really sure what to look for in a band. I know that I don’t want a super thin band. I don’t even know whether I want platinum or white gold (since it’s just a plain band, the extra cost from the different metals is negligent because it’s already gonna cost less than $1000.)

About my jewelry wearing habits in case that affects your advice: I had a thin banned ring on my right hand for a while that had a high set stone. None of this bothered me, but I prefer the look of a thick band. Since the stone of that has fallen out, I’ve been wearing my class ring again since my finger felt “naked.” I don’t wear a lot of other jewelry, but I usually wear a watch.
Oh… and 14 or 18 karat gold, which is better for an every day ring?

Obviously an 18 karat gold is worth more… but the 14 would be more durable…

Do some people make too much out of wearing wedding rings?

December 1st, 2010

My man hasn’t worn his for years do to the work he does. I’d rather he didn’t wear one than run the risk of loosing a finger at his job.

I don’t wear one since I broke my ring finger on my left hand and frankly it feels bad to have any rings on that finger. So I haven’t worn mine for over 10 years.

Neither of us see this as an issue. Why is it for others????

How come some guys wear dual wedding, rings one on each hand?

Is there any particular reason for this? Seems like a waste of money to me unless there is a meaning behind it.

What are some signs or reactions if you are allergic to white gold?

November 4th, 2010

My wedding band and engagement ring are 18k white gold and my finger breaks out in this red rash. My finger where I wear the ring gets really dry and it is so itchy. I have gone to get the ring cleaned, I have gone up in size thinking maybe it was too small I even avoided wearing it in the summer thinking it was the heat. Any suggestions, I love my ring and I am so bummed.
p.s. I even switched hands, the same reaction occurs

My fiance is a transformers freak. He has been collecting them since he was little. I know childish but the original ones are worth alot now so its worth it. Anyway I agreed to have transformers symbols on our wedding bands in order to have my dream wedding. Small sacrifice on my part huge one on his. So any way that leaves me high and dry on where to find the rings. Please only serious responces to this question.

I would like them to be made out of platinum or gold and have some precious stones in them. They need to look good with the one for the main wedding day when I am wearing a suit and stuff that you can see on my previous question (but not the bag). Please could anyone recommend some ring from online as they are hard to find for me as I am male in jewellers near where I live at limited funds.

Can anyone give me some info on rhodium plating over white gold?

March 5th, 2010

I have been married 14 months and my white gold wedding rings are really turning yellow. I wasn’t aware that you had to get your white gold replated every year or so. When I was in the mall this past week, one jeweler told me that for $40/ each ring, they could replate them. That’s $120 for my and my husband’s rings. To me that’s a bit much for ring maitenance every year. Does anyone know of any places that can replate them for a decent price and quality job? Also, is is possible to give a near-permanent plating, so you don’t have to keep re-doing it?

Appreciate any info or personal experiences on this

Some customs and traditions in relation to the wedding rings

January 9th, 2010

Throughout the ages the wedding day has been the most special day for most of the people. On this vary day it is believed that the souls of two individuals becomes one. And as the symbol of this union the custom of exchange of rings between the bride and the groom is followed. The custom of exchange of rings both for marriage and betrothal seems to be quite old a tradition. This tradition has come through ages and is still in its height of popularity.

In the customs of most of the countries the wedding ring is worn on the left hand ring finger. It is believed that there is a vein that generates from this finger and goes straight to the heart. Thus the belief is that there is a direct connection of the heart to that finger. Though in actual reality there is no such vein in that finger according to the medical study. Therefore there is no binding that one should wear the wedding ring on that finger only. As in many countries the tradition already exists of wearing the wedding ring on the ring finger of the right had. Thus the finger on which you wear the wedding ring does not matter so much.

According to the tradition of Britain it is the duty of the best man to keep track of the wedding rings of the bride and the groom and they are the one who present the ring at the symbolic moment of the exchange of the wedding rings. Sometimes in case of elaborate weddings it is the custom that a young boy from the family of the bride or groom may assist the bride or the groom as the ring bearer. Thus it is seen that the tradition in relation to the exchange of the wedding rings differs in different cultures and customs. But the fact is that the custom of exchange of rings remains almost the same in almost every customs.

In case of the style and the material of the wedding rings there are also the differences n different traditions. However, in the most common cases it is the gold that is the most preferred material for the wedding rings. It is often seen that women generally wear narrow bands while men have broader bands. As for the style of the wedding rings in France and French speaking countries there is common patter of the ring of three interwoven rings are considered as the wedding ring. These three rings stands for the Christian virtues of faith, hope and love. As in Greek a kind of puzzle rings are offered to the bride as a test of the women. This is kind of set of interlocking metal bands which the women have to arrange in such an order so that they form a single ring. In some parts of Europe and North America a custom is followed by the women of wearing two rings on the same finger one of which is the engagement ring and the other the wedding band.
