White sapphire engagement ring?

I’m a pretty frugal person. My boyfriend and I have been talking about marriage and I’m pretty sure he’ll be proposing in the next few months. I have a few questions. First, I want a white sapphire ring instead of a diamond ring, at least for my engagement ring. I hate people spending a lot of money on me. Is that a good idea for an engagement ring? I would probably want a diamond ring for my wedding band, but at least then I’d definitely pitch in for it.
I also would like to go ring shopping with him. He doesn’t have bad taste in jewelry, but I’m kind of particular. I know he’d be fine with it because he would rather get something that he knows I like than have to choose himself, but how do I bring this up? I feel awkward telling him what I want when he’s the one proposing. What’s the easiest way to do that?

diamond substitute? white topaz or white sapphire?

my husband originally bought my enagement ring (white gold princess cut solitare) in march of 2007. in november of 2007 we bought our wedding rings and we brought my engagement ring in because the back of it turned gold and it was guaranteed not to. i figured they would just dip it in white gold as my friend had the same issue at a different jewler and thats what they did but instead they replaced the ring saying it must have been defective which i was ok with. well we were married in november 2007 and it has been about 7 months and my rings are gold on the back again. it upsetting because 3 months ago a stone fell out of my wedding band and they repaired it but this is the 4th problem i’ve had with my wedding set in a year! i’m filing a complaint with them but i want to get a new ring from someplace else. being young (20 and 22) and newlyweds, we don’t have thousands to spend on a nice set and my husband has always felt guilty about not buying me a bigger ring even though i never
..asked for it. i would like a stone that resembles a diamond but isn’t. i’m looking at a white topaz or white sapphire. what are the differences between those 2 and a diamond? and i mean visually are they close in appearance? are they able to hold up long term? what would you do?
