Mom vs daughter engagment ring battle?

November 24th, 2011

My mom and father did not get married till I was almost 17 (they at the time had been in law school, opening their own firm and raising me and my 3 sisters) any how, my father purposed with a ring had the wedding whole nine yards many years later I got engaged and now married. My father gave my mother a plain solitaire with a diamond a little over 1/2 carrot, when I became engaged I also received a solitaire diamond engagment ring but my diamond is slightly under 1 full ct (a noticeable diffrence) might I add the stone of mine is a family stone passed down. My mother and I live states away but every time I go home to see her she points out how mine is bigger. At one point I took mine off and put it in her jewlery box with hers and she tried to take mine as her own! (which we know it wasn’t bc the size diffrence and one is platinum ones white gold) how do I get her to stop its gotten to the point that I don’t want to wear it to her house bc she is driving me nuts! What do I do?

Sorry for !any typo this was typed on my phone!

My mother told me she didn’t like my engagment ring because the diamond was “tiny”!?

October 16th, 2011

So my fiance and I saved up together to get an engagement ring I love. It’s white gold solitaire ring and the diamond is .5 carats. I love it. I couldn’t stop smiling for days after we purchased it. When I showed my mother my ring she got this funny look on her face. She told me the diamond was “tiny” and she didn’t like it. Then went on to say that I should trade it in for a bigger diamond and she hoped we kept the receipt. I was so embarrassed and extremely hurt. I had no idea what to say so I just mumbled something about it being all we could afford, smiled, and changed the subject.

I don’t know how to react to this situation. My mother is my best friend and I would love for her to be happy for me instead of worrying about the size of the diamond on my finger (which I think is huge). But my mother has always been a little snobbish. Her solitaire ring is 1.5 carats, so you can see why she would think mine is tiny compared to that. Plus my parents do have alot of money so sometimes they forget that I am not as wealthy as they are. I’m a 21 year old Nursing Assistant, so I don’t have alot of money to spend on engagement rings.

I just don’t know how I should react to this situation. I’m trying not to be hurt about it but it’s difficult not to be. I just don’t know if I should let it go or if I should say something. Maybe I am overreacting. What do you all think?

And no, my parents are not helping out with the wedding. My fiance and I are paying for it ourselves.

Platinum engagment rings? Too soft?

January 11th, 2010

My friend is an “engagement planner” and she told me to avoid platinum for engagement / wedding rings. Even though it’s a wonderful metal, platinum rings are very soft, like gold, and will eventually wear thin on the bottom of the ring. Some of my married friends regret getting platinum because they always have to run to the jeweler every couple of years, dropping $200-300 to fill the ring back.

Is platinum really that soft? Should I get a titanium ring instead? I don’t care about price; I’m more concerned about the durability of the ring.

Should my engagment and wedding ring be the same white gold carat??

December 29th, 2009

My engagment ring is 14ct and while wedding ring shopping i’ve fallen in love with an 18ct white gold band, but some jewellers have told me to match the carat so one ring does not ‘wear’ the other while other jewellers say that it does not matter… i’d love to know what you think about this — does your wedding and engagement rings match in quality??? thankyou
