Im getting married in October. It is actually a planned elopement. I’m very excited. My fiance has yet to purchase my engagement or wedding ring which doesn’t bother me a bit because we are eloping. We’ve actually been looking at rings together which I love. The problem is that we both want to different things. I would love a beautiful sapphire engagement ring with a simple band in white gold. He says that my rings are a reflection of him and a sapphire ring would look cheap thus making him look cheap. He wants to put a big ol’ diamond on my finger. ( which I know shouldn’t upset me.) What bothers me is that I don’t want him to buy a ring as a status symbol, I want a reflection of his love. He thinks I’m being ridiculous, but appreciates my feelings of sentiment over the desire to have a huge piece if bling.

Who’s right? Should I have the right to choose what kind of ring I have because we are eloping and it isn’t a formal or traditional engagement?

Or should he have the right to choose because it is a gift from him to me? ( plus he did say he would get me a sapphire ring later on)

However some of you think that we have an uncompramising relationship, for those I believe you neglected to read the last sentence where I stsed that he said he would get me a sapphire ring later on . We have a great relationship. We just had a difference of opinion which some have taken as though our marriage may have bigger issues and I must say I do take offense.

For everyone else thank you, I believe I will let him choose the ring for my engagement but we will pick the wedding band together. I do want him to have the joy of surprising me with the ring he thought I would love. It would mean alot to him and we will have plenty of anniversaries to get sapphires!!
