I was just wondering if platinum is a better alternative to yellow and white gold? I love the “color” of white gold, but I am again having problems wearing my wedding ring. I went to see a dermatologist and he said it was because I’m allergic to the nickel in the metals. What do I do? anyone have any advice?

November 4th, 2010My wedding band and engagement ring are 18k white gold and my finger breaks out in this red rash. My finger where I wear the ring gets really dry and it is so itchy. I have gone to get the ring cleaned, I have gone up in size thinking maybe it was too small I even avoided wearing it in the summer thinking it was the heat. Any suggestions, I love my ring and I am so bummed.
p.s. I even switched hands, the same reaction occurs
Allergic to Wedding Ring, any fix?
October 26th, 2010I did not know when I picked out my wedding ring that white gold is made with nickle, a metal I am allergic to. Now if I wear my ring for more than a day my finger will get irritated and start to itch like crazy. My wife would obviously prefer if I wore it though she understands the quandary. Is there any way the inside edge of the ring can be coated with some material to prevent the allergic reaction? I tried painting it with clear nail polish which only worked for a day and then came off (it couldn’t bind to the smooth metal).

April 6th, 2010I think I may have developed an allergic reaction to my 10k white gold wedding band (well I guess to be more accurate the nickle that it possibly contains.) Even if I wear it for a short amount of time my finger swells up and breaks out in this odd bump covered rash. Is there anything I can do to the ring that can make it wearable without this happening?

April 6th, 2010i’ve had my platinum wedding band set for over 7 years…wearing it with all different exposures to (my hands) to weather, chemicals etc. we just recently came back from cancun and i was wearing it all week with the sun, humidity, sand and various other variables. after being home for 2 days, i noticed that the skin under the ring started to hurt and was very red and almost moist (not itchy though). i was able to remove the bands and left the skin to “dry” and heal. it was very crusty and i had thought it was healed so i put the rings back on…no sooner than a week and the same symptoms cam back…this time with my finger being a bit swollen. i’ve never been allergic to any metals my whole life…able to wear all kinds. could this be an allergy or possibly some sort of fungal infection? what could i put on it to heal…ive tried neosporin.
Allergic White Gold Wedding Ring – Was Jeweler Honest About Alternative?
August 27th, 2009My engagement ring and wedding band are white gold. I am allergic to white gold. I went to a jeweler today and asked about it being coated with a rhodium seal. He highly recommended not doing so and just replacing it with a platinum setting because I would constantly keeping having to have it resealed. Is this true, and if so how often will I have to have it sealed because to get a platinum setting and new band will be very expensive.
